3 Types of Electrical Service Wire

3 Types of Electrical Service Wire

Electrical service cables vary by frequency, number of phases and voltage levels. Electrical services wire types are categorized by frequency, the number of phases, their rated voltage levels and whether they have a neutral conductor. This impacts their working ability and efficiency.

There are different electrical service wire types which are categorized by the number of phases, their rated voltage levels, frequency and whether they have a neutral conductor. The type of wire is one major factor that determines the capacity of a building's electrical service. The rated capacity of the main electrical power switch, electrical panel and the electric meter used in the installation also play a part in this electrical service circuit. The different types of electrical service wire include;

·         Single-Phase
This is the type of electrical service which usually has a three wire configuration. It is also known as the center- tapped neutral or Edison system. This electrical service wires provide one hundred and twenty volts for lighting and formulaic plug loads and two hundred and forty volts fir single phase appliances, such as air conditioners and water heaters .This type of single phase wiring is the one that is most commonly used in many states. Most home owners prefer using single phase electrical wire services as compared to the two-phase and three-phase respectively.

·         Two-Phase
This type of electrical service system is extremely rare. The two phase electrical service system is absolute styles of electrical energy distribution where two phases are provided that are ninety degrees out of phase angle with each other. This system is kind of outdated and not used regularly nowadays. It has two live wires and one which is neutral, therefore two phase service was majorly a two phase three wire service. Another different type of two-phase electrical used four line wires and one neutral wire for a two-phase five wire service.

·         Three-Phase

Three-phase installations provide a reliable and smooth wavelength that most industrial appliances and those that require high voltage such as refrigeration systems, saw mills and air conditioners require in order to operate effectively. This makes this type of electrical service system the most popular in industrial and commercial buildings which need to run heavy consumers of voltage machinery. The three-phase electrical service system has two commonly used wiring types: The three-wire delta and the four wire wye. The Wye electrical service has a neutral wire which also allows it to be used for single-phase appliances. However the delta system provides service voltages ranging from two hundred and eight to six hundred and even higher, which explains why it is mostly used in industrial facilities and appliances.

The development of electrical service followed different development paths from one country to another. This has determined the type of electrical services wire types each country or region most commonly uses. In addition to the risks posed to you and all of the other people in your home and surrounding, improper electrical service systems can be potentially hazardous to your electronics. This crucial safety feature takes the extra electricity away from your device, which can save your electronics from incremental wear and tear and catastrophic damages. As a result, your appliances last longer giving you an added span of expected service time. It is exceptionally wise if you know the electrical service system installed in your home.
