The Wide Area Network (WAN) is one of six layers in the path between a trading platform and the Exchange. It is the long-distance network connection that sits in-between your Local Network and the Exchange. There are two basic types of WAN connections – the Internet and a Private circuit. The Internet is bad for low-latency trading as it is a network shared by everyone. A private circuit is a dedicated piece of wire that runs in-between two data centers and is always better than the Internet - it is not shared by the world and it runs a direct course between two points. If your trade path runs on a private circuit, always check the path is the lowest latency path on the market.
