ICE also houses the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). The ERO Agents primary duties include arranging for the removal of apprehended aliens and locating fugitive aliens who have failed to appear for their Immigration Hearing.

ICE began with the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in 2003. ICE investigators were brought from two sources: Immigration investigators under the Department of Justice and Customs Investigators under the Department of Treasury. These two sets of investigators combined to form the investigative arm of ICE.

ICE Special Agents investigate offenses in violation of Federal Law pertaining to both Customs and Immigration. Special Agents are required to work closely with the US Border Patrol and with Customs and Border Protection Operations at the Ports of Entry and continue investigations initiated by these two agencies.

Since its creation in 2003, ICE has received a great deal of positive media attention for their investigations into child pornography. They are also currently investigating numerous offenses relating to copyright infringements where fraudulent trade-marked products are smuggled into the United States illegally and often sold as the authentic product.

Immigration related investigations, such as worksite enforcement operations, are considered a double edged sword and receive both positive and negative media and public support. Yet, these investigations are an integral part of the duties allocated to ICE Special Agents.

ICE investigators often are involved with complex and continuing investigations with ties to human and contraband smuggling, forced labor and indentured servants, fraudulent document manufacturing operations and a variety of other Customs and Immigration related crimes.
