The Olympics are in Beijing in 2008, how are the teams selected for the competition?
The mandated levels of athlete participation has generated changes in the selection process for the Games. Each region is no longer assured an athlete in each activity - today countries and players have to compete against not merely their countrymen, but against the others inside their region or continent for an Olympic slot.
In the 2004 Olympic Games each of the men's events (epee, foil, and saber) were involved, but two of the three women's events didn't support the group competition.
The international wall federation (FIE) moves the functions which will sit out the team percentage of the Olympics, and for the 2008 Olympic Fencing competition, Men's Foil and Women's Epee will only hold a person competition.
Who reaches go?
Players are competing for slots based on their nation's standing in-the world (for team activities) and based on individual world rankings (for the individual events.) Here's a breakdown of what it will take for a future swordsman (or swordswoman) to get yourself a ticket to Beijing:
Tools with Group Events (Men's Epee, Men's Sabre, Women's Foil, Women's Sabre ):
Group Events are comprised of groups of 3 fencers with 1 alternate. A complete of 8 teams may participate in each team event (9 if China does not qualify a team straight). Visit fundable competition to learn why to deal with it.
The top 4 groups on the planet standings can qualify straight to the Olympics. The rest of the 4 groups are selected based on local certification. A regional berth that will be earned by the top team from each region ( Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa ) is not already qualified.
The patient function is really a event with a field of 3-9 fencers. For the specific competition, the 24 fencers that competed in the group function qualify. After the first 2-4 fencers are opted for, the top 3 on earth standings qualify, with only one fencer from any one place. Another 7 are pulled from the Olympic zones since the top 2 from Europe, 2 from Asia, 2 from the Americas, and 1 from Africa, again with only 1 fencer from a place. The remaining 5 slots are dependant on a continental qualifying competition with 2 from Europe and 1 from each of the remaining areas.
What about Men's Foil and Women's Epee?
A different set of criteria can be used to select the 2-4 fencers who will participate within the Men's Foil and Women's Epee events. Because there is no team event, every individual will need to qualify on their own benefit and not on the position of these national team. The following method can be used to select the 24 individual entries:
The top 8 in-the World rankings get their tickets punched (but only 2 can go from the sam-e place from this set.) After the first 8 are opted for, the next 8 in are selected by region based on adjusted world rankings. (There are 3 slots for Europe, 1 for Africa.), 2 for the Americas, and 2 for Asia The final 8 qualify based on continental contests where nations that have perhaps not qualified any fencers on the first 2 units. In the last round, the allocation of slots remains at 2 Asia, 3 Europe and Americas, and 1 for Africa.
