How to Buy Hardwood Flooring

There are so many choices, how can you decide which hardwood flooring to buy? You have to choose the right color, the right width, and even the right type of wood for your home. It can leave you dazed and confused about what to buy. Here are some tips to help you start thinking about the kind of hardwood floor you need.

Personal Tastes

You are going to have to live with the decision you make, so be sure you like the floor you choose. Don't let someone else talk you into a hardwood floor that isn't what you want. Even if your first choice is not practical for your home, you can almost certainly find a replacement that is similar. For instance, if you prefer a darker hardwood and someone tells you it will look too dreary in your living room because you don't have enough lighting, don't switch to a light wood just because you are advised to. Instead, try out a multi-tone hardwood that has both lights and darks. It will add warmth without being too dark for a room.

Traffic Flow

When deciding what kind of hardwood floor to choose, you have to think about where you are installing it and what kind of traffic it will see. A floor in a bedroom will have a much different traffic flow than one in a busy living area.

Who will be walking on this floor? Will it be just you or will there be kids and pets? If you like to entertain, you must think about that additional traffic. A high-gloss floor shows marks and scratches more than one with a matte appearance. Make sure you choose a hardwood style that will continue to look nice years from now.

Overall Design

When picking any element for a home, it is easy to get carried away with the choices and select something simply because you like the way it looks. However, don't forget that it is also part of an overall design. You must think about how the floor will look with the walls, cabinets, window and door trim, and even your furniture and drapery.

Don't forget about the architecture of your home. While it may not be as noticeable in modern homes, you can definitely see this element in many older houses. If your home is one with a lot of character such as window seats, tall doorways with wide trim, and other unique qualities, you will want that same character to be present in your floors.

Because this is probably a one-time purchase, you should think about now and the future. You can easily change out draperies and accessories and will even probably replace some of your furniture a time or two. That is why you must choose flooring that you like and that works for you rather than trying to match it with your current set-up.

Buying a hardwood floor is a big decision. Take the time to think about your choices and how each one will fit in your home and your life before selecting the right one.
