Are 3.73s any good with lower horsepower engines? I have an 86 SS El Camino with a 305 V8, a 200R4 overdrive transmission, and 2.56 rear end gears, which are 7.5in. and no posi. I have an 86 SS El Camino with a 305 V8, a 200R4 overdrive transmission, and 2.56 rear end gears, which are 7.5in. and no posi. I don t have a lot of cash coming in right working minimum wage, but I was looking for a way to get some speed with not a lot of money, because I am going to save up for a new engine once I graduate college. Anyways, I thought about switching my rear end gears to 3.73s with posi. I don t think my mileage would be much worse, because I barely ever hit 4th gear as it is with my super high rear end. With 3.73s, I d just get to 4th gear faster. My concern was whether or not these gears are too low for my engine. It only makes like 165hp, and I don t know how much torque, but I know it s low too. A friend said that a low end like that with low HP/TQ will not be any good for acceleration, which is what I want more of. I read o line of people saying that it is better than 2.56s, but I don t want to throw away 400 bucks just for an unnoticeable difference in acceleration. Anyone have experience in this stuff? Any help is appreciated.
