The thousands of Americans who suffer with knee and hip pain would be stunned to know that that pain may NOT be associated simply with the joints alone. As a result, these areas of complaint are often misdiagnosed due to the focus on just the knee and hip joints.
Dr. Lynn Knuth of Red Mountain Family Chiropractic says I see people every day who have hip and/or knee pain and the problem can often stem from Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome. The iliotibial band is a muscle, the tensor fascia lata, which runs down the outside of the thigh just below the hip to the tibia (just below the outside of the knee).
The main causes of IT Band Syndrome are:
Is stretching any use? Dr. Knuth said Of course, stretching the iliotibial band is often recommended as an iliotibial band syndrome cure-all, but just relying on stretching may fool people into thinking that they are truly getting at the root of their iliotibial band problems, when in fact their gains in flexibility must be combined with correcting the leg length issue along with improvements in strength in order to make the iliotibial band highly resistant to injury.
