Explanations of PTSD focus mainly in route the mind is suffering from traumatic experiences. Theorists speculate upon experiencing overwhelming trauma, the mind struggles to process feelings and data in an ordinary way. It is as if the feelings and thoughts at the time of the traumatic event take on a life of their own, later intruding into awareness and causing distress.
Pre-traumatic psychological aspects (for example, low self-esteem) could make this process worse (for example, low self-esteem may be reinforced by a brutal rape). Post-traumatic reactions by others (for example, a raped girl who's seen by household as “dirty”) and from the self (for example, physical discomfort due to thoughts of the rape) could who gets PTSD? also are likely involved in influencing whether such symptoms persist. It is hypothesized that only after effective reprocessing of the traumatic event(s) do PTSD symptoms decrease.
