Source: UF's Matt Rolin has back injury

Florida linebacker Matt Rolin missed the season opener due to injury and will be out for at least the rest of September, a source close to the player told The Sun on Thursday.

Rolin suffered a herniated disc during UF's second scrimmage of preseason camp and has been non-contact since then, the source said. He is still practicing with the team.

Gators coach Jim McElwain was asked Wednesday about Rolin but did not disclose his injury.

I don't know what it is, McElwain said regarding Rolin's status. He's got something every day. He's, uh, yeah.

Rolin has torn his ACL twice in his left knee, the second time as a true freshman in August 2013. He spent the 2014 season recovering, but went through UF spring practice.

Rolin had an Electromyography (EMG) procedure done Thursday for his herniated disc, according to the source. An EMG detects neuromuscular abnormalities by stimulating the nerve cells that control muscles and measuring their response.

A timeline for Rolin's return has yet to be determined. Florida quarterback Will Grier suffered a herniated disc in September of last year but was ready to play the second week of October for the LSU game.
