LOS ANGELES A Los Angeles airport police dispatcher who answered an emergency call when a gunman opened fire last year didn't know where the call was coming from because of a communications system flaw.
Two officials told The Associated Press that the airport phone system didn't identify that the call came from a security checkpoint.
The officials briefed on preliminary findings of a review of the Nov. 1 fatal shooting insisted on anonymity because the final report won't be released until next month.
Airport dispatchers knew something was wrong but didn't know where to send help because the system didn't identify locations of its emergency phones. The dispatcher eventually hung up because no one was on the line.
Airport police were dispatched about 90 seconds later after another call for help.
