Amino Acids

Your brain is made from, fueled by, and repaired by the food you eat. This is also true of your entire body. Amino acids play very important roles in the brain. Some are neurotransmitters themselves (glycine, glutamate, GABA). Others are precursors of some neurotransmitters. Amino acids form neuropeptides.

Resources

I have listed some references that are good resources on nutrition. Ref. 1 is by Adelle Davis, who was a brilliant nutritionist. At one time they were called dieticians. Ref. 2 is very controversial. Oncologist Ewan Cameron and double Nobel prize winner Linus Pauling discuss the treatment of cancer. Ref. 3 advocates the use of nutrition in mental health.

Ref. 4 discusses the glutamate theory of depression.

Psychodietetics

Psychodietetics was a term invented by Dr. Cheraskin and Dr. Ringsdorf. One of the principal principles is that sugar makes mental illness worse. Since sugar causes an increase in brain tryptophan, this supports my theory of excessive tryptophan in the brain causing mental illness.

Gluten

Celiac disease is a gastrointestinal disease with psychiatric symptoms. This disease is a food allergy. The patient is allergic to gluten in the diet. Also glutamine, which is in milk, is avoided.

Certain carbohydrates are considered good for your digestion. These are all plant foods. Apples, beans, papaya, pinapple, and brown rice have been recommended by the magazine Digestion & Diet

Digestion

There are a lot of digestive diseases, unfortunately. Crohns disease and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) are two of the worst. Lactose intolerance is very annoying but easily treatable. Dairy products must be avoided.

Certain carbohydrates are considered good for your digestion. These are all plant foods. Apples, beans, papaya, pinapple, and brown rice have been recommended by the magazine Digestion & Diet in the Vol. 11, No. 4, Fall 2001 issue. This same issue favors losing weight, if you are overweight, to prevent acid reflux.

Weight Loss

The above issue of Digestion & Diet favors eating foods with soluble fiber (in veggies, fruits, and beans) to reduce belly fat. Apples and green peas and broccoli were mentioned favorably. Visceral fat has been linked to high blood pressure and diabetes.

A low-fat diet is suggested.

Conclusions

There are a lot of issues and controversies in nutrition. Psychodietetics, which is the same thing as Linus Paulings orthomolecular psychiatry, is very controversial but correct. This will be elaborated upon in future articles. There have been many claims for miraculous cures for a wide variety of diseases using orthomolecular medicine. This approach is cheaper, safer, and more logical than drugs.
