The X-ray diffractogram for the N powder BGC 20-761 given in Fig. 1. The metastable IQC phase has been formed with the α-Al. No intermetallics were observed. Peak positions at 2θ angles of 22.5, 40.9, 43.1, 61.0, 73.1 were identified for the IQC phase labelled using the Cahn’s notation . The XRD for the γ-alumina powder is also given at the bottom in Fig. 1, γ-Al2O3 peaks are broad and the main peaks of the cubic γ-Al2O3 phase can be overlapped with the main peaks of the other phases of alumina, such as the monoclinic phase. The relative intensities between peaks differ from the reference pattern , especially between the (4 0 0) and (4 4 0) planes with peaks at 45.6°(2θ) and 66.9°(2θ) respectively. In a study into commercial γ-Al2O3 nanopowders , the authors attributed primary body phenomenon to “differences in site occupancies within the unit cell”, suggesting possible causes to be anisotropic crystal shape or the presence of another Al2O3 phase, since γ-Al2O3 is the most thermodynamically stable Al2O3 phase at room temperature and for nanosize particles <13 nm in size .
