One man’s mission for World War II veterans - Honor Flight

May 2005 saw a special dream come true as Honor Flight took wing and flew into the realm of reality. That month, six small planes from Springfield, Ohio carried 12 World War II veterans to Washington D.C. so they could visit the memorial built to commemorate all of the men and women of the Greatest Generation who served in some branch of the United States military during a time of war. By August, the waiting list of World War II veterans had ballooned in size to such a degree that commercial airline carriers stepped in to help with the transportation.
