Renovation of major shrines in full swing ahead of Mahamaham

For the past weeks, the recital of holy verses associated with the special "kaala" pujai for the "kumbabhishekam" of temple, has been reverberating through the public address system as a chain of 17 temples in the town were being renovated as part of the special efforts taken by the State government for the forthcoming mahamaham festival scheduled for February next year.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department has been renovating the temples -- 12 Saivite temples and five Vaishnative temples, for the mahamaham. This apart special efforts were being made for the renovation of the temple tank which has a vast area of about six acres of land.

Renovation of the temples and the tank had been taken up a cost of Rs. 12.81 crore. The "kumbabhishekam" had been performed for six temples while the kumbabishekam would be performed on Thursday for two temples -- Sri Ekambareswarar temple and Sri Amirthakalasanathar temple, Sakkottai.
