Holland America Line to debut family and single rooms on board ms Konigsdam

Holland America Line announced Tuesday that the newest addition to the fleet, the ms Konigsdam, will feature the lines first purpose-built staterooms for families, as well as staterooms designed for solo travelers. In addition to these new stateroom categories, the line also announced that existing stateroom categories would be available in a more diverse range of sizes and configurations. Konigsdam will also offer 912 staterooms with verandahs, the most yet for a Holland America ship.

The ship will feature 32 specially designed family staterooms ranging from 222 to 231 square feet. The rooms will feature ocean views and are located on Deck 1, both forward and aft. The family rooms will feature two lower beds convertible to a queen, a sofa bed for two, and an upper berth. The room will also be outfitted with two bathrooms: one full bath with bathtub, shower, sink, and toilet; the other with a shower and sink. Konigsdam will also debut Holland Americas first single staterooms. Ranging from 127 to 172 square feet in size and outfitted for solo travelers, these are outside staterooms with ocean views. The latest deck plans for the ship dated October 2014 indicate the single staterooms will occupy Deck 1 forward, although the latest release from Holland America Line indicates the 12 single staterooms will be available on multiple decks with a variety of forward, midship and aft locations. "A cruise is one of the most popular ways to travel as a family, and we continue to welcome more multigenerational groups each year. To help us better serve families, we are pleased to be able to offer these tailored staterooms on ms Koningsdam," said Richard Meadows, executive vice president, sales, marketing and guest programs. "And the new one-person staterooms enable us to serve the growing market of solo travelers." Multigenerational cruising is a growing market segment for the cruise industry, and Holland America joins the ranks of several other cruise lines which are offering staterooms priced for single cruisers. The staterooms were designed for functionality based on guest feedback, and new features include bedside USB ports, custom casework, and frameless glass shower doors that feel elegant and luxurious. Artist renderings also show stylized crown moldings, a feature that is somewhat atypical of seagoing spaces.

The vessel will also feature a more diverse range of suite layouts and sizes. The Grand Pinnacle Suite is 1,290 square feet and features a bedroom, living room, dining area, dressing room, and private verandah with whirlpool. There are also two Neptune Spa Suites and 43 Neptune Suites which range from 465 square feet to 855 square feet, a wide spread for a single suite category. The ship will also have 14 Signature Suites up to 400 square feet, and 104 Vista Suites ranging from 260 to 356 square feet. All suite categories feature upgraded accommodations and amenities; Neptune and Pinnacle Suite categories include access to the Neptune Lounge, a feature available on all Holland America vessels.

"Holland America Line is known in the cruise industry for providing well-appointed staterooms," said My Nguyen, Holland America Line's deputy director of interior design. "With ms Koningsdam we enhanced these qualities by including many thoughtful details that improve the functionality of the staterooms. We also adopted a color pallet that takes advantage of texture and quiet color combinations to achieve a feeling of serenity and luxuriousness in each category."

Konigsdam is the inaugural vessel in Holland Americas new Pinnacle Class of ships. Outfitted with interior designs in collaboration with Adam D. Tihany and Bjorn Storbraaten, the ship is currently slated to be delivered from the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in February 2016.
