“But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name; which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God” - John 1:12, 13 (KJV)
There are many who are quick to answer “Yes!” to the question of “Have you received Christ?” or “Are you a child of God?” Their reasons include “Because our family has produced several priests in the past.” Others also say, “In our family we all go to church on Sundays” or “My late uncle was a catechist and so I can say the whole family know Jesus.” Some claim “God and everyone in this community know me; I don’t quarrel, drink, or meddle in other people’s business.”
No matter your reason or excuse, the Word of God says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23 and “the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” – Romans 6:23. Christ has paid for that already. He died for you to live.
The Word says “…as many as received him” and not “…as many as received him from others” or “as many as are good by community’s standard.” This tells you not all in the world are the sons of God; you must receive Christ on your own.
Again, the Word says, “to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” Those who truly receive him are those who believe on his name –the name of Jesus. Just as Jesus is the brightness of God’s glory and expresses the very character of God, so are those who receive Christ. The power he gives makes available everything you need for living a godly life. God wants you to be like him in how you think, speak, and act.
The ensuing verse, 1 John 1:13 says, “which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God.” The New Living Translation says, “children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” It’s neither a physical birth nor the decision of any man nor by self-effort. Neither can it be inherited from parents or relatives. It’s by faith.
You must believe and confess the Lordship of Christ as in Romans 10:9. It’s by this that you are infused with the life, nature, character, and the righteousness of God. The power of God then works in you outward. There are also other benefits you receive.
If you do, pray this prayer right now and tell others too: “O Lord God, I confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life, and believe in my heart that you raised Him from the dead for my justification. Therefore in accordance with your Word, I receive eternal life into my spirit, declaring that I’m a child of God now. Amen.”
