4. Conclusions
The fermentation type in acidogenic phase could be transformed by controlling ORP, pH, and OLR. Ethanol-type, butyric acid-type, and mixed type fermentation were observed in the acidogenic phase. The butyric acid-type fermentation was proved to be the optimal fermentation type for production of total VFAs and ethanol in hydrolysis-acetogenesis process and methane yield in methanogenic phase. In acidogenic phase, the acidification degree of butyric acid-type fermentation was 36%, which was 13% and 20% higher than those in ethanol and mixed type fermentations, respectively. In methanogenic phase, the highest biodegradability reached 95% by digesting the effluent of butyric acid-type fermentation, which was 16% and 21% higher than those in digesting the effluent of ethanol and mixed type fermentations.
