Once over the Hottentots-Holland mountains, we find ourselves in the Overberg region. With corn (wheat) farming being the optimum yield of the largest part of the region, Overberg is known as the 'breadbasket' of the Cape.
NB: Overberg means 'on the other side of the mountain'. 'Holland' is another word for 'Dutch'. 'Hottentots' was the Dutch's name for the indigenous people of the region - the Khoisan people. The Hottentots-Holland mountain range was the border between the Europeans and Khoisan.
