British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada. It is bordered by the province of Alberta, the states of Washington, Idaho and Montana and the Pacific Ocean. There is no other Canadian province or territory that contacts the Pacific Ocean. British Columbia has 17,000 miles of Pacific coastline and about 6,000 islands, most of which are uninhabited. The population, (as of 2009), is estimated to be just under 4.5 million people. Most people live in the southwest portion of the province.
