Pennsylvania Bed and Breakfasts

The bed and breakfast has a long and full history that dates back to Roman times. Travelers in this time span would find people in the town square who were offering a room as Guest House Room in their home for the night. Private homes were more comfortable than cozy inn with breakfast, as well as less costly. The amenities were usually much cleaner and more welcoming, so it became a practice to stay in private homes as they travelled.

In the 1700s and 1800s the bed and breakfasts became very common. These were private residences which would cater to a specific type of person. The country was in a state of war to some extent. Traveling statesmen and army officers would often need a place to stay. Men and women who knew of their arrival in their town would open their homes to them, offering them what comfort they could during their stay.

The practice expanded so that other people also began to open their homes, but in many cases they would specialize in the people who stayed with them. For example, a physician would open his or her home to a doctor who was traveling through, while an attorney who got wind of someone who was visiting the area would open up his home to that attorney. They would speak far into the night and in the morning, before leaving the professional would offer them a meal to tide them over before they went on their way.
