Central Asia occupies the territory of five republics: Uzbekistan, Kazachstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and has the total territory of 3,990,300 km2.
Traveling to Central Asia has always been an exciting experience.
For many centuries this distant and isolated territory was somewhat like Terra Incognita for westerners and traveling to this No Man’s Land had always been fraught with danger. Until the 19th century the Central Asia was not even properly mapped. Only as a result of the Great Game the intelligence services of two competing empires - Russia and Great Britain started the study and research of Central Asia and it resulted in occupation of Central Asia by Russian Empire in 1864-1873. The railway to Central Asia was built in 1890-s which made possible travelling to this area by railroad. Immediately the Russian and European scholars, scientists and travelers started visiting the so called Turkestan.
But the first proper Central Asia Tours were organized only during the Soviet period, in the mid-20th century. Even then it was not easy for a foreigner to visit Central Asia, because out of five republics only Uzbekistan had more or less suitable touristic infrastructure with hotels, restaurants and comfortable buses. Some areas in Central Asia were restricted for foreigners. After the independence in 1990-s all countries of Central Asia experienced the touristic boom. Visa policy was made easy and tourists and travelers from different countries flooded into area. Though the infrastructure was still lacking the Central Asia tours became a new trend in tourism. Gradually the private sector replaced the old government Intourist system and privately owned travel companies, hotels, B&Bs and restaurants started taking over. Nowadays all five republics have all necessary facilities for different travelers with different demands, tastes and budget.
Central Asia tours are mainly oriented for travelers who are interested in history of the Great Silk Road, culture of different nations of Central Asian countries and architecture of Golden Age of Islamic Renaissance. Countries like Kazachstan and Kyrgyzstan mainly offer the nomadic heritage and lifestyle of the steppes and mountains, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan offer the cultural and architectural heritage of Great Silk Road and the ancient empires of the past, while Tajikistan offers unique nature with 5-7 thousand meter high peaks and the traditions of the people who were isolated from the rest of the world for centuries.
