I played World of Warcraft for nearly two years. During, this period of my well being I ran a small guild, but would be a notable PVPer on my small server Boulderfist. During those years we had the Honor System, not the token system that exists today.
The honor system allowed players to compete for your top ranking of Grand Marshal or High Warlord. The old honor system, of classic WoW were gone. No longer could you compete to become a top rank, you can simply play as hard and as long while you could and get the rare armor, like everyone else. By taking away the ranks and making the honor avaliable to everyone, it suddenly made the best a part of the game, the honor system, simply a formality to grinding pvp gear.
I played a little of the current token system, but never felt in your own home with it. As a high level officer I respected the Grand Marshals that I played with. This was the reason why that I quit WoW, since it took away the only real presitge offered in the game and opened it up to everyone.
It took away the prestige of the game, it rewarded the ordinary and penalized the super elite class of pvpers that had developed during the honor days. World PVP was discouraged. Sure, the cons towards the honor system were that few people could have the rare armor, not everybody could play 15 hours each day to have enough kills and honor points to level up after the week.
