Khon Kaen-the Gateway to Isaan
Many Thailand tourists have been aware of Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, but few venture towards the northeast and head for the region know as Isaan. This is in the northeast and composed of Udorn Thani, Khon Kaen, Korat and others. That is largely a rural area with many grain plants. It's also the home of numerous expatriates who have settled down with their Thai girl and have made this their new home. I was in Korat twice during exercise Cobra Gold and just got to see this area fleetingly. Working 12-16 hour day didnt allow enough time for sightseeing. But, I did observe that the price of living was a lot less than the larger tourist cities and individuals were a heck of a lot friendlier. I visited Khon Kaen for the first-time in 2007 to go to a girl that I met online. I instantly fell in love with the girl and also with the town of Khon Kaen. Khon Kaen is only a 5-5 minute flight from Bangkok departing from the old airport terminal Don Muang. The airport in Khon Kaen only has two starting gates and is quite little. Town is a pleasant mixture of old and new. We'd go out for lunch or dinner and sit-in small bungalows along the river or one of many rivers and dine in pure enjoyment. Three to four dishes of a few beers, excellent food and some water and the statement will be about $10 - $15. O-n the flip-side, there's also KFC, Pizza Company and other fast food places. Western influence at its worst. Shopping again can be a mix of new and old. You can visit the food market or the night market or head-to the Fairy mall or the electronics mall. From low priced T-shirts to current movies o-n DVD to bootleg software, Khon Kaen has everything. I stayed at a small hotel called Cactus Resort. It was in the town but perhaps not in the center. It would take us about 5 minutes to visit the mall or out to dinner. The buying price of the space was about $16 per night. The maid also found that I was drinking a lot more than my allotted 2 free bottles of water and increased my free water to four bottles. The resort didnt have a restaurant, but there is one right next-door. This was not issue for me as my girl would make my break fast at her house and carry it to me and pick me up some food for lunch. We would then go out every evening for dinner and drinks. Khon Kaen is a very comfortable and affordable place to live.
