The Rose Festival of Bulgaria
Bulgaria is among the biggest producers of rose oil in the entire world. The Bulgarian roses are inheritors of the so called Damascena rose and were brought to our lands during the 17th century. The Rose valley of Bulgaria includes Kazanlak and Karlovo fields with area is about 3,400 km2 - prolonging more than 140 km along the Stara Planina mountain, encircled by two mountain hills, which help create a unique local climate.
This festival was held for first time in 1902 from the citizens of Kazanlak and was dedicated to the beauty and charity. The rose industry and rose cultivation have been kept by generations of enterprising people from the Rose valley. Every year, during the first weekend of June, local people organize the annual Rose festival. Today the Festival Of Roses is an international event, visited and enjoyed by hundreds of tourists and guest visitors of Kazanlak. Nowadays the Rose Festival in the Rose valley has come to be a symbolic expression of the lifestyle and the cultural patterns, typical for Bulgaria and kazanlak region.
The Rose festival program includes the traditional rose-picking ritual and rose distillation that guarantees a real feeling of authenticity and the coronation of Queen Rose. The festival closes with a street procession in which the main role is given for the guests of the International Folklore Festival. There are other quite interesting events, taking place during the festival days - folklore concerts, exhibitions, wine-tasting, shows.
