Microsoft introduces Windows Live Messenger to Xbox 360 console.

Windows Live Messenger has been introduced on Xbox 360 by software company Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT) to connect users across the consoles, Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Windows Mobile-powered devices.

Microsoft said the Xbox 360 Spring Update will provide users with access to Windows Live Messenger features from 7 May 2007, widening communications on the Xbox LIVE social network. It confirmed that Xbox LIVE members, who send over 2m text and voice messages each day, will be able to text chat via Windows Live Messenger, with up to six contacts, while playing games, watching films or listening to music.

The Spring Update also includes new features such as enhanced family settings for Xbox LIVE communications, with different defaults for video chat and voice chat; a new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade and updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade. It will offer faster access to free trial-version games in Auto Downloads, progressive download controls and an extension to the background download functionality to enable users to set their console to turn off after download.

In addition, Microsoft plans to introduce a QWERTY text-input device this summer, to connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller, supporting text and instant messaging.
