The Story Behind Stardust: It mostly started in 1991, explained Gaiman. Charles and I won the world dream prize for Sandman 19: A Midsummer Nights Dream. Where we actually shocked ourselves and everybody else by winning the award we were out in Tucson, Arizona. We amazed everyone to the point that the judges, the key committee behind the judging, got together the following day and changed the rules so it might never happen again.

I went out to a celebration held by a girl by the title of Terry Windling out in the desert that night. And in the Tucson desert, I got to watch a falling star. In England, theyre only kind of a streak of light across the sky. I ran across if youre in the Tucson desert and you watch, its similar to this little stone decreasing. You get, My God, that was., just watching it. I thought, What-if you went to get that falling star? And then I thought, And what if it wasnt a star, it was a girl. And what if she had a broken leg and a foul-temper and had no wish to be shown to anybodys would-be fiance and dragged halfway around the world? Suddenly, there is the story.

We did the-art as a kind of presentation to editors first, said Gaiman. So in 93, Charles did a number of the paintings and so its type of taken a little while to wend its way into the planet. It was published in 98, I think, and then 99 without the images because we checked out our contract and found that DC had given us those rights without really noticing they had. The remainder is history or economics or something..
