Body Exfoliating Tips for Dry Skin
Body exfoliating is one of the basics of good skin care, especially for dry, dull skin. It is also easily overlooked. Most people wash with a cleanser and moisturize with a lotion, but not everyone realizes the benefits of scrubbing away dead skin cells. How often should you exfoliate everyday, once a week, every other day? For dry and sensitive skin, one or two times a week is enough. Too much skin exfoliating can actually increase dryness. Dermatologist Darren Casey recommends an everyday treatment to remove dead skin cells and oil, as long as it is done gently. Try a basic washcloth or a loofah sponge. For dry skin, save the pumice stone for calluses on the feet.
Body scrubs are wonderful. They can provide the skin with nourishing ingredients while also exfoliating the skin. When dealing with dry skin, look for products that contain moisturizing ingredients such as nut oils, shea butter, and coconut oil.
To make a homemade scrub for dry skin, mix one cup of cane sugar crystals with one-third cup of milk, two tablespoons of olive oil, and three drops of orange essential oil. The sugar will exfoliate, as will the milk. Both are sources of alpha hydroxy acids, natural compounds that help to slough away dead skin cells.
To use, scrub the body while the skin is still dry, using a circular motion. Exfoliate the entire body, starting with the hands and feet and working your way towards the center. Focus on dry, flaky areas like elbows and heels. Use the body scrub alone, or apply it with a loofah sponge or any other body exfoliating tool.
Moisturizing After Exfoliating
After scrubbing, rinse the skin. An easy way to integrate this skin treatment into your skin care routine is to scrub before starting your shower. Once you are done, always moisturize with a nourishing body lotion to help lock in moisture.
Practicing this skin treatment regularly can help with dry skin, but it is also great for normal and oily skin types. Also, look for what may be causing skin dryness. Sun exposure, heating and air conditioning, and skin conditions are all possible causes. With proper care and protection, you should notice an improvement with your skin.
