Eddie Redmaynes Oscar buzz is at an all-time high thanks to 'The Danish Girl', where everyones favourite redhead will play transgender pioneer Lili Elbe. Finally we have an official trailer, and you can watch it right here

The Danish Girl might still be four months away from an official release, but Universal Pictures have finally revealed the official trailer for the movie, which stars Eddie Redmayne as one of the first male-to-female transgender women. Trust us, after watching this, youre going to be desperate to book your tickets.

Eddie plays Einar Wegener, a painter who transitioned into a female called Lili in the 1920s. Rising star Alicia Vikander (you can find out everything you need to know about Alicia here) features as Eddie Redmaynes wife, Gerda, replacing - get ready - Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz, who were all rumoured or at one point confirmed for the role. The Danish Girl trailer also sees Eddie share a smooch with Matthias Schoenaerts, with Amber Heard in a supporting role as Oola.

The Danish Girl is based on the novel by David Ebershoff, which fictionalised the life of Lili and her journey to becoming the female she identified as. Eddies performance is heavily rumoured to be a future Oscar winner with a brave performance, but not everybody is entirely happy. LGBTQ activist Ellen Page, who you may know better as Juno, told Time magazine that she finds it borderline offensive when straight actors are called brave for taking on an LGBTQ role, as a gay actor wouldnt (and shouldnt) be considered brave for playing a straight person.

Elle Fanning, whose portrayal of a female-to-male transgender teen in About Ray is due out later this month, faced similar backlash for her character, with many asking whether talented trans teens are even being given the opportunity to audition. After the huge success of Orange Is The New Black, and Amazon Instant Videos Transparent, it looks like transgender stories are finally getting the airtime they deserve, so isnt it time to cast some representative faces? Either way, The Danish Girl looks set to be a huge hit for 2016.

The Danish Girl is out on January 1st.
