By eighth grade, you figure, students will probably come across a lot of big themes in English class. Love. Death. Loyalty. Loss.

This was only one of the problems with a New Jersey schools eighth-grade English homework assignment, which became a viral media phenomenon last week. It was a writing prompt, based on the self-help book Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Students were given a hypothetical scenario: Imagine going to an awesome party, having sex with a stranger, and waking up the next morning to discover that you have herpes. For life.
