Workplace Fitness: How to Burn Calories at Work
If youre stuck sitting at a desk all day and simply cant find the time or energy to go to the gym, you can try exercising at the office. There are many benefits of exercise at work. Youll burn calories, improve flexibility and enhance your circulation. You might even become more productive at your job!
Workplace fitness comes down to squeezing some activity into your day. One of the most enjoyable ways to do this is to sneak in walking breaks. Bring a pair of walking shoes to work and head outside during your lunch break or when others are taking coffee or cigarette breaks. Its best to aim for at least 30 minutes of activity for the day, but it doesnt have to be all at once. Even a five minute walk to the other side of the building counts. Take the stairs instead of the elevator and park your car at the far end of the parking lot. Stand up and walk in place while you're on the phone. It all adds up.
Another method of exercising at the office is to exercise from your desk. Resistance bands are inexpensive and easy to store in a desk drawer. Use your feet to hold down the center of the band, loop the ends around your hands, and do bicep curls, shoulder presses, and triceps extensions. To strengthen your core, you can purchase a fitness ball and sit on it instead of your chair as you work on your computer. If you dont have any equipment, try leg extensions (extend one leg out straight, hold a few seconds and lower), or pushups against your desk.
Its important to do stretching exercises while at work to keep your muscles from clenching up. Drop your head to one side, and then slowly roll it forward, to the opposite side, and back. Stretch your shoulders by reaching both arms out in front of you and gently pulling on one wrist with the opposite hand, then switch sides.
