Vandalism on the rise at Westpark Cemetery
JOHANNESBURG - Vandalism and the theft of tombstones is on the rise at the WestPark Cemetery.
Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) says it's working hard to prevent the situation from escalating.
JCPZ spokesperson, Jenny Moodley said they are "working closely with private security companies to clampdown on the ongoing theft of the metal palisade fencing that borders Melville Koppies and the WestPark Cemetery."
"This has led to reports of the desecration of graves and opportunistic crime in the facility. At this stage JCPZ is unaware of the theft of granite headstones. We however appeal to families that have experienced the theft of headstones or have had the graves of loved ones damaged, to please report this to the local police station," Moodley said.
"This will ensure that these incidents are accordingly documented and that the necessary resources are deployed to combat any criminality at WestPark cemetery."
