Fake ‘letting agents’ scam would-be tenants

Imagine arriving at the home you will be renting, a truck laden with all your possessions in tow, ready to move in, only to find that someone else is moving into the property. You soon discover that the person to whom you paid the deposit is not an estate agent but a crook. And the lease you signed is fraudulent.

This is exactly what happened to Capetonian Rob Gear (not his real name) about six weeks ago.

Gear is one of about 10 would-be tenants who have reported being scammed to Steer & Co, a Cape Town property company.
