Twitter says it's being blocked by Pakistan's government

Twitter says the Pakistani government blocked theservice on Saturday.Other social media sites like Facebook may be blockedas well.It's unclear why Pakistan would block social mediasites, but it could be related to recent protests in thecountry.

Twitter's service was blocked by Pakistan's government Saturday,thecompany said in a tweet from its policy account.

"We are aware of reports that the Pakistani government has takenaction to block Twitter service, as well as other social mediaservices, and that users are having difficulty using Twitter inPakistan. We are monitoring the situation and hope service willbe fully restored soon," Twitter's statement reads.

There have also been scattered reports that Facebook and othersocial media sites have been blocked. Business Insider hasreached out to Facebook for confirmation.

It's not clear why Pakistan is blocking social media sites,but the Associated Press reported Saturday that the governmentsent in troops to address an Islamist sit-in in Islamabad.
